Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWPs) are now governed by new ANSI standards that took effect in December. These changes impact owners, operators, and supervisors using aerial lifts, including boom lifts, scissor lifts, and under-bridge inspection machines.
These standards aim to align U.S. safety practices with international benchmarks, increasing global consistency and competition in the equipment manufacturing industry.
Formerly called Aerial Work Platforms (AWPs), these machines are now referred to as Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWPs). Classification has shifted from equipment type to movement and function. For instance, if a platform can extend beyond its tipping line, it is classified as Group B.
Both Group A and Group B refer to how the lift behaves when elevated:
Group A Type 3: Electric scissor lifts, stock-pickers.
Group B Type 3: Boom lifts that extend beyond the tipping line.
Employers and rental companies must now develop and document a formal risk assessment and site safety plan. This plan must be shared with all jobsite personnel prior to MEWP usage.
Mandatory documented training now includes operators, occupants, and supervisors. These training updates ensure everyone near a MEWP understands how to operate and respond safely.
